THE HOUSE  & ITS HISTORY

Henri Joseph Harpignies - The Old Oak, 1895

The roots of the Domaine de la Trémellerie date back to the Middle Ages. Of the 17th century building, only the current kitchen remains. The house was bought in 1860 by the painter Henri Harpignies, who lived there until his death in 1916. Henri Harpignies was a renowned naturalist painter.

Somewhat forgotten by the Impressionists and the modern movement, it is present in many museums, in France (Valenciennes, his birthplace, Orsay, etc.), and throughout the world (Washington, etc.). Several famous paintings illustrate the Trémellerie. It was at this time that the estate took on its definitive structure with a vocation that was both artistic and agricultural (orchards and market gardening), but also ornamental and pleasant, in the romantic style of the second half of the 19th century. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of the painter Henri Harpignies, the association "Les amis d'Harpignies" has created a route through the village punctuated with reproductions of the painter and easels for painting yourself in exceptional locations.
